In the Puna and Ka'u districts molten lava flows into the ocean, while further North lies the Parker ranch, one of the largest cattle ranches in the world. Lava plains of Kohala contrast sharply with the lush rainforests of Hamakua.

Kamehameha, best known of the Hawaii Kings was born here.

One of the major exports are orchids. Hawaii is also known as the "Orchid Isle."
